We're encouraged to "become" almost from the moment we begin to understand the world: become successful, confident, a leader. Become your best self.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to grow; growth is part of being human. But sometimes, in all our striving to become someone, we lose sight of the person who's already here.

Perhaps identity has never been about becoming someone else, but rather being more fully yourself. How about that for a different lens?

What if we viewed identity not as another achievement to unlock or another version of ourselves to construct, but as an anchor? A place to return to when life becomes noisy, uncertain or full of competing expectations. A place that feels like home.

Identity doesn't have to be about having all the answers. It isn't about creating a perfect version of yourself. It can simply be having a secure sense of who you are, even when life becomes uncertain.

When we have that anchor, we're less likely to be pulled in every direction by other people's opinions or by whatever success happens to look like at the time. We make decisions with greater clarity because we have a stronger sense of what fits us and what doesn't.

That doesn't mean your life stays the same. In fact, a healthy identity allows you to change. Careers can evolve, relationships can grow, and new opportunities can appear. The circumstances of your life may look completely different from one chapter to the next, but what remains is the thread that runs through them all.

Perhaps that's why understanding who we are matters so much. Not because life never changes, but because it always will.

And when it does, we all need an anchor. We need a place to be before we decide what to do.
