The Notes You Were Given
Some of the Notes that shape us were there long before we knew how to name them.
Some are natural, of course, you were just born with them. Some arrived before you had a say.
Maybe it was a parent who showed you what it looked like to care deeply about people, a teacher who saw something in you before you saw it yourself, or a community that shaped how you move through the world.
Some of those qualities feel so familiar, so natural, that it’s easy to overlook them. It seems they were just… always there.
But what was modelled for you can still become part of who you are. The curiosity you absorbed is still yours. The resilience you watched and learned from still shaped you. It doesn’t matter that it arrived as a gift - it still became part of your composition.
The Notes you inherited are still your Notes - at least they can be, if you choose to keep them.
Not everything passed down fits. Some inherited Notes were never really yours to begin with. Maybe there was a role you stepped into because it was needed, an identity that made sense for someone else’s story, or an expectation you’ve carried for so long it started to feel like fact.
The work isn’t to reject where you came from. It’s to look clearly at what you were given and decide what you want to keep.
Some of those inherited Notes will surprise you. Qualities you assumed were ordinary because they came from someone familiar to you - a parent, a grandparent, a mentor - that the rest of the world would recognize immediately as rare.
Others you can choose to set down, quietly, without drama. Not because they were wrong, but because they were never quite yours.
Your Music is made of both: what you arrived with and what you’ve chosen since. The Notes you inherited are part of the composition. And when you look at them clearly, not with guilt or obligation, but with honest curiosity, you may find that some of the most valuable parts of who you are have been there all along.
Waiting for you to see them clearly.
